Timeless Fusion: Where Traditional Meets Contemporary

October 29, 2024 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm PDT

Artists Nereida Apaza and Terumi Saito will be in conversation with art historian Susana Navarro about their experiences in reinterpreting ancestral techniques.

Join us for a panel discussion about the fusion of traditional arts with contemporary practices, moderated by art historian and curator Susana Navarro Hospinal. Artists Nereida Apaza and Terumi Saito will share their experiences in reinterpreting ancestral techniques, seeking to reflect on the cultural impact of these transformations. These artists work to maintain traditions, learn from them, and innovate them, while respecting the roots and revitalizing them in a contemporary narrative. The conversation is enriched by a shared passion for art and a desire to connect past and present.

Nereida Apaza is a Peruvian artist who has incorporated embroidery in several of her pieces as a language that uses tradition to tell contemporary social narratives and critiques. Terumi Saito is a Japanese artist who lives and works in New York. She did a residency in Urubamba and became interested in the technique of backstrap weaving, which she incorporates into her sculptures. Her interest is in the preservation of traditional techniques and how they maintain a common thread with contemporary narratives. Susana Navarro will be asking questions, and also talking a bit about her research and experience having contact with the families and workshops of the traditional embroidery that is done in the central region of Peru.

Support Our Community Programs

In just over 4 years, Portland TextileX Month (PTXM) has turned from an ambitious idea into an engaged community movement. This transformation highlights the power of our mission to foster collaboration, cross-pollination, cultural dialogue, and intergenerational exchange among the Portland textile community and beyond.

This year we’ve organized the PTXM festival with over 40 events and directly sponsored a multitude of FREE programs including exhibits, workshops, artist talks, community events, and more—representing a diverse range of textile interests and practices. This year’s PTXM Regeneration Festival has brought together makers, businesses, teachers, students, institutions, and organizations to gather around shared interests and knowledge-sharing. PTXM would not have been possible without the dedication of event organizers, paid contributors, paid interns, amazing volunteers and the receptiveness of the textile community.

We hope to continue building PTXM and TextileX website as sustainable resources that serve the textile community for years to come, and that’s where you come in.

If you feel a connection to the PTXM mission and what we can accomplish together, please consider making a direct contribution programming. As a direct contributor, your funds will go directly toward programming, lean administrative expenses, and providing paid internships. We appreciate any contribution you can make and your continued support.
