The Reuse, Repair, and Adaptation of Japanese Textiles

October 19 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm PDT

Fashion designer and textile collector Andrea Aranow will discuss the reuse and adaptation of Japanese textiles.

In this lecture, noted fashion designer and textile collector Andrea Aranow will discuss and illustrate her ongoing perception of textile reuse from two viewpoints. She will begin by exploring the reuse of designs that developed through the long history of textile trade and commercialization, and how aesthetic admiration and commercial competition gave rise to the widespread distribution of motifs and techniques. Secondly, Aranow will discuss how old individual fabrics became elements of something new during Japan’s modern history through the regional practice of reuse in 19th and 20th century Japan.
