The Joyful and Elegant Dance of the Central Peruvian Andes – Dance Workshop

October 19, 2024 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm PDT

Come experience the basic elements of Andean social dancing.

Come experience the basic elements of Andean social dancing with Luciana Proano. Emphasis will be given to understanding the irregular time signatures of Central Andean music from Junin. We will explore Wayno, Muliza, Huaylash and Tunantada styles. All levels, no special clothing necessary.

Luciana Proaño is better defined as an artist than strictly a dancer. A native of Peru, she spent most of her 20s, 30s, and 40s bouncing between her home country and Europe, creating dark performance-art pieces set to live music. Today, her work is more joyful but still surreal. Nothing is precisely choreographed, though, so each performance is different.

This workshop is in conjunction with the exhibit, Threads of Time: Textile Legacies from Junín, Peru:

In her travels through Peru, Andrea Aranow was captivated by the stunning beauty of the landscape, the rich culture, and the continued use of handwoven clothing around her. After six months of serving as the regional textile researcher at the Instituto Nacional de Cultura, Aranow felt called to do original fieldwork, collecting and documenting the region’s unique, creative textiles and dress.

Aranow’s collection includes daily-use items like tapestries, mantas, and alto-relieve embroideries. These items, each a testament to the region’s history, feature heroic religious and military themes, with elements such as airplanes and flowers and distinct motifs and patterns. They serve as a unique connection to the past, preserving the historical significance of the region’s textiles.

The resulting Peruvian collection curated and managed by Textile Hive comprises over 700 textiles and garments, thousands of field photos, Aranow’s research notes, video interviews, and lectures about her time living and collecting in Peru between 1973 and 1980. Cultural historians, fashion, and art enthusiasts will be mesmerized by the breadth and beauty of this never-shared-before collection.

Textile Hive invited Susana Navarro Hospinal to craft and refine Threads of Time: Textile Legacies from Junín, Peru. An independent scholar, art historian, and curator, Hospinal specializes in the art of modern Peruvian textiles and embroidery. She has published articles on communication strategy in cultural and artistic institutions and currently works with several contemporary visual artists on curatorial projects for private organizations. Her curatorial approach highlights cultural narratives and traditional techniques in a contemporary context.

Support Our Community Programs

In just over 4 years, Portland TextileX Month (PTXM) has turned from an ambitious idea into an engaged community movement. This transformation highlights the power of our mission to foster collaboration, cross-pollination, cultural dialogue, and intergenerational exchange among the Portland textile community and beyond.

This year we’ve organized the PTXM festival with over 40 events and directly sponsored a multitude of FREE programs including exhibits, workshops, artist talks, community events, and more—representing a diverse range of textile interests and practices. This year’s PTXM Regeneration Festival has brought together makers, businesses, teachers, students, institutions, and organizations to gather around shared interests and knowledge-sharing. PTXM would not have been possible without the dedication of event organizers, paid contributors, paid interns, amazing volunteers and the receptiveness of the textile community.

We hope to continue building PTXM and TextileX website as sustainable resources that serve the textile community for years to come, and that’s where you come in.

If you feel a connection to the PTXM mission and what we can accomplish together, please consider making a direct contribution programming. As a direct contributor, your funds will go directly toward programming, lean administrative expenses, and providing paid internships. We appreciate any contribution you can make and your continued support.
