Stitching Justice: Social Justice + Textiles
October 22 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm PDT
A social justice+textiles panel discussion with the founders of 25Million Stitches, the Social Justice Sewing Academy, and the Tiny Pricks Project.
Textiles have a long history of being used semiotically and subversively by those who are marginalized in society, from Gandhi’s weaving for revolution, to Chilean Arpilleras, Hmong story cloths and countless others. Textiles have been used as powerful tools for personal and collective expression; they give people an outlet for speaking up about a range of political and social justice issues through a tactile and readily accessible medium. In this panel, we will talk with organizations who bring awareness both locally and nationally to audiences about a variety of contemporary social justice issues through the simplicity of a stitch. Through discussion, we will learn how they got started, their processes, their project goals, and their thoughts on the movement of craft and textiles as a means for social justice.
