A remembrance and opening showcase of fashion, textile, and costume materials from the Andrea Aranow Textile Research Center
How do you preserve, honor, and carry forward the legacy and life’s work of a fashion and textile collecting pioneer? Once a collector departs this world, what happens to the soul of a collection and the objects it contains? Are collections best served and utilized as central repositories or physically dispersed or aggregated online in the digital era?
Join Shadrach Todd and Caleb Sayan as they remember and celebrate the extraordinary life and adventures of their mother Andrea Aranow. This event will showcase materials from the Andrea Aranow Textile Research Center at Textile Hive including books, research notes, field slides, textiles, costumes, garments, quilts, accessories, and other significant materials. Over Andrea’s lifetime of research and collecting these materials this is the first time that they will be displayed or housed together. Materials on display will include garments and photos from Dakota Transit, textiles and costumes collected in the Sierra Central of Peru, clothing and textiles created by the Li and Miao peoples of China, Japanese textile artwork and kimonos, and textile swatch books, among many other treasured objects.
This event marks the start of a multiyear effort by Textile Hive to organize, exhibit, and promote cross-cultural engagement with Andrea’s collections in order to determine how the materials can best be preserved and carried forward for future generations.
