Homelands Within
October 5-November 4
“Homelands Within” is a month-long exhibit featuring the works of contemporary SWANA textile artists from the Portland area.
“Homelands Within” is a month-long exhibit to showcase and support regional artists from the SWANA diaspora, and raise funds for programming and our homeland communities with gallery hours, classes and artist talks.
Our members practice traditional regional fiber arts like Palestinian Tatreez, mending, knitting, crocheting, Armenian Janyak, Marash, and quilting; through SWANA Stitch, a collective of stitchers who have been coming together once a month for over a year, we have created a space for us to explore those internal homelands together through handwork, cultural resistance, and storytelling.
This exhibit reflects our community’s lived experience of diaspora and exile, often forced, and how we continue to carry our culture, traditions and practices into a shared future. While many of us cannot return to our homelands, textiles are a physical thread that maintains our connection and stitches us together as a community.
Opening Reception: October 5th, 5pm-9pm
Gallery Hours: Sundays 1pm-5pm, Mondays 2pm-6pm
