Join us for a hands on exploration of indigo & flax to linen on picturesque Sauvie Island. Participants will have the opportunity to explore both of these crops, in the fields where they are grown.
Shannon Welsh of Fibrevolution will lead a hands on exploration of flax to linen, from field to fiber. Participants will process flax with hand tools – breaking, scutching, and hackling retted flax from last years harvest at an OSU test plot. Shannon will also speak about planting, growing, harvesting and retting flax fiber for linen. We’ll be discussing the state of linen production in the PNW and the people involved in revitalizing the industry.
Kara Gilbert of Vibrant Valley farm will guide participants through the process of indigo from field to extraction.
*Please bring a lunch, waterbottle and sun hat. We will be in the field!
