Exploring Katagami and Katazome
October 16-October 31
Explore Japanese dyeing techniques through the textiles of KATA KATA and Cargo’s collection of vintage Japanese textiles and stencils.
Cargo and Hello! Good Morning! will showcase the textile work of KATA KATA of Chofu Japan, alongside Cargo’s collection of vintage Japanese textiles and stencils. The installation will focus on the use of Katagami & Katazome dye techniques, in the modern setting and in its historic context, pairing examples of traditional themes beside KATA KATA’s contemporary interpretations.
The techniques that KATA KATA use are the traditional katagami & katazome techniques handed down from their parents, utilizing traditional themes but with a modern interpretation. For example, they’ll select animals indigenous to Japan and represent them in a whimsical and contemporary way. The installation will have these contemporary textiles on display next to vintage Japanese katagami stencils as well as vintage Japanese katazome.
The installation in Cargo’s freight elevator will include KATA KATA products available for purchase, photos from their Japanese studios, as well as vintage katagami stencils & brushes and vintage katazome textiles.
Opening weekend is Saturday October 16th, remaining up for the duration of the month. Come visit anytime Cargo is open, Wednesday-Sunday 11-5pm.
Registration for this event will open on September 26th.
