Comunidad-Chalecos Protector Workshop with Orquidia Violeta

October 17 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm PDT

Co-create a collaborative community Protective Vest.

Surrounded by a showing of 15 Chalecos Protector (protective vests), workshop participants will co-create a collaborative community vest.

Pre-cut panels will be provided that can be sewn, dyed, or decorated with salvaged fabric, weavings, and found objects. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on what they want to communicate through their portion of the protective vests. Whether it’s a personal story, a cultural motif, or a statement of resilience, each stitch and brushstroke becomes a part of a larger narrative. After the workshop, the participant’s panels will be sewn together into a protective vest, and displayed on a mannequin in the exhibit for us all to see what the community created together.

Join artist Orquidia Violeta for an evening of art, conversation, and connection at the opening of Story within Chalecos Protector (Protective Vests) on Thursday, October 3rd from 6pm-9pm.

“Each vest is a unique refuge, depicting balance amidst pollution, disorder, and darkness. These protective vests hold a dual significance. They serve as physical armor, offering protection against external elements. But they also symbolize a deeper sense of protection—of origin, identity, and values. Creating my Chalecos Protector was a personal breakthrough, allowing me to find strength and purpose in my textile art. I look forward to sharing these pieces with you and discussing the stories and inspirations behind each one.”

Support Our Community Programs

In just over 4 years, Portland TextileX Month (PTXM) has turned from an ambitious idea into an engaged community movement. This transformation highlights the power of our mission to foster collaboration, cross-pollination, cultural dialogue, and intergenerational exchange among the Portland textile community and beyond.

This year we’ve organized the PTXM festival with over 40 events and directly sponsored a multitude of FREE programs including exhibits, workshops, artist talks, community events, and more—representing a diverse range of textile interests and practices. This year’s PTXM Regeneration Festival has brought together makers, businesses, teachers, students, institutions, and organizations to gather around shared interests and knowledge-sharing. PTXM would not have been possible without the dedication of event organizers, paid contributors, paid interns, amazing volunteers and the receptiveness of the textile community.

We hope to continue building PTXM and TextileX website as sustainable resources that serve the textile community for years to come, and that’s where you come in.

If you feel a connection to the PTXM mission and what we can accomplish together, please consider making a direct contribution programming. As a direct contributor, your funds will go directly toward programming, lean administrative expenses, and providing paid internships. We appreciate any contribution you can make and your continued support.
