Communities Interwoven Distributed Community Project Workshop

October 9, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm PDT

Join the Communities Interwoven Portland TextileX Month 2021 Distributed Community Project Workshop at the Woodlawn Farmers Market for weaving and natural dye demonstrations.

Communities Interwoven is an experiment in community healing through natural dye and weaving workshops, open to the public, hosted by the Woodlawn Farmers Market. When we think of “generations,” we think of what has been passed down as traditions, a continuity of culture passed on through story or practice. As we consider the theme of “New Traditions”, we must recognize that the quality of newness in relation to tradition must be the type of new that is found. In other words, a “New Tradition” would seem to be an old tradition experienced as new for the first time. The project coordinators, Bardsley and Carter-Lopez recognize from experience that craft can function as an aid to navigate trauma. They hope to introduce others to old traditions that may become a new tradition that brings healing through meditation and the joys of self-expression.

Portland TextileX Month Distributed Community Projects (DCP) connect people with broader communities and are made possible by a grant by the Multnomah County Cultural Coalition. Our DCPs have a broad social impact within communities by encouraging collective participation and partnering with artists and leaders who can act as amplified facilitators for dialogue and creative expression. The DCP submission process prioritized projects that are led by or served marginalized or under-represented communities and often feature collaborations between artists, organizations, and community leaders from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The Communities Interwoven workshop is also made possible by the Portland Handweavers Guild, Brooklyn Tweed, Wildcraft Studio School, Woodlawn Farmers Market, and the PNW Fibershed.

Support Our Community Programs

In just over 4 years, Portland TextileX Month (PTXM) has turned from an ambitious idea into an engaged community movement. This transformation highlights the power of our mission to foster collaboration, cross-pollination, cultural dialogue, and intergenerational exchange among the Portland textile community and beyond.

This year we’ve organized the PTXM festival with over 40 events and directly sponsored a multitude of FREE programs including exhibits, workshops, artist talks, community events, and more—representing a diverse range of textile interests and practices. This year’s PTXM Regeneration Festival has brought together makers, businesses, teachers, students, institutions, and organizations to gather around shared interests and knowledge-sharing. PTXM would not have been possible without the dedication of event organizers, paid contributors, paid interns, amazing volunteers and the receptiveness of the textile community.

We hope to continue building PTXM and TextileX website as sustainable resources that serve the textile community for years to come, and that’s where you come in.

If you feel a connection to the PTXM mission and what we can accomplish together, please consider making a direct contribution programming. As a direct contributor, your funds will go directly toward programming, lean administrative expenses, and providing paid internships. We appreciate any contribution you can make and your continued support.
