Bindle to Bohcha: Carrying Cloths Around the World

October 17 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm PDT

Discover the history and range of wrapping cloths, textiles used for centuries for the storage and transportation of goods.

Wrapping cloths are a reusable alternative to bags. From the sturdy cloths of the Andes, intended to last a lifetime, to the Japanese furushiki that are patched with recycled fabric to extend their useful lives, carrying cloths reflect their sustainability through repair and reuse. From the hobo’s bindle to the Turkish bohcha and Korean bojagi, purpose-made cloths have long been used around the world. They vary in size and manufacturing technique based on available materials and intended function and thus show both the practicality and art of textiles. This lecture will survey a number of these special cloths from different regions in the Americas to East Asia, and conclude with a brief demonstration with suggestions for making your own cloths.
