A Common Thread: A Collaborative Crochet Experience
October 22, 2023 @ 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm PDT
Build a collaborative sculpture by crocheting around a common thread that travels from person to person, connecting the art and the artists.
In this unique collaborative project, everyone works on the same sculpture at the same time, crocheting around a single very long rope that winds around and around; rows connect together and everyone is connected to each other by the common thread. Unusual materials, many recycled and not usually associated with crochet, will be used, adding to the adventure. The project builds community through working in concert with people on either side and across the table from each other to create something magnificent. The piece grows and shrinks, then grows again depending on the number of stitches and the ways the core meanders, there is no preplanned design: the participants are the designers with each workshop yielding a unique artwork. The creation of each piece is a surprising and fun journey. A previous participant described it as, “…artists shared their ideas and helped each other form the composition from a wild and unruly bundle, a common idea emerged and a singular work was created. It was kind of magical and wonderful”.
Crocheters only need to know how to do a first and second row. Everyone is welcome, right and left handers, from novices to experienced crocheters; the technique is easy for novices to learn and the process lets experienced crocheters build on their skills. All materials and tools supplied. Please bring a donation of non-perishable food to the workshop for the St. Johns Food Share, a food pantry in St. Johns where Bonnie is a volunteer.
This event has been made free to attend through funding through Portland TextileX Month. Please consider making a direct contribution to help support future programming like this.
