Warp Speed: Contemporary Conversations in Fiber

September 23-October 25

Contemporary Conversations in Fiber featuring 5 Portland-based artists and fiber works from the former Museum of Contemporary Craft Collection

The Center for Contemporary Art and Culture at PNCA is proud to present Warp Speed: Contemporary Conversations in Fiber. Featuring new, contemporary works in fiber from 5 Portland-based artists: Carolyn Hazel Drake, Michael Espinoza, Abbie Miller, Melissa Monroe, and Joshua Sin, presented alongside historic fiber works from the former Museum of Contemporary Craft Collection, Warp Speed spans over five decades of fiber innovation and artistry.

Warp Speed blends historic fiber works alongside innovative use of fiber and textile-based artwork, including disparate techniques and material applications, ranging from hanging interactive sculpture to tufted furniture. Each of the five Portland-based artists follow the inquiries present in their rich practices, to colorful and textural ends. Individual artist inquiries include: matrilineal heritage, queer sexuality and community, textile history and production, wonder and play, and cultural symbol and ceremony.

For the exhibition, each artist worked with CCAC curator Marsha Mack to identify a historic fiber work to serve as muse, touch point, or departure point in the development of their own works. Each artist’s work is presented in loose conversation with an object from the Museum of Craft Collection, which is now owned and restored by the Hallie Ford Museum of Art in Salem, OR.

*Please note that work in the exhibition contains sexual content that may not be appropriate for all audiences.

Support Our Community Programs

In just over 4 years, Portland TextileX Month (PTXM) has turned from an ambitious idea into an engaged community movement. This transformation highlights the power of our mission to foster collaboration, cross-pollination, cultural dialogue, and intergenerational exchange among the Portland textile community and beyond.

This year we’ve organized the PTXM festival with over 40 events and directly sponsored a multitude of FREE programs including exhibits, workshops, artist talks, community events, and more—representing a diverse range of textile interests and practices. This year’s PTXM Regeneration Festival has brought together makers, businesses, teachers, students, institutions, and organizations to gather around shared interests and knowledge-sharing. PTXM would not have been possible without the dedication of event organizers, paid contributors, paid interns, amazing volunteers and the receptiveness of the textile community.

We hope to continue building PTXM and TextileX website as sustainable resources that serve the textile community for years to come, and that’s where you come in.

If you feel a connection to the PTXM mission and what we can accomplish together, please consider making a direct contribution programming. As a direct contributor, your funds will go directly toward programming, lean administrative expenses, and providing paid internships. We appreciate any contribution you can make and your continued support.
